Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) does not announce itself the way a blooming dogwood or a patch of black-eyed susans does. It is a modest, twiggy understory shrub that most people walk past without a second look. Look closer in a Wilmington-area floodplain or shaded ravine, though, and you will find a plant carrying an outsized share of the ecological workload: feeding butterfly caterpillars, fueling migrating songbirds, and holding its own in the wet, part-shade spots where a lot of natives struggle.
If you have a shady, moist corner of your yard that nothing seems to want, spicebush is worth a real look.
Meet Spicebush
Spicebush is a deciduous shrub in the Lauraceae family, the same family that gives us cinnamon, bay laurel, and avocado. In North Carolina it grows naturally in moist bottomlands, ravines, and along streams from the coastal plain to the mountains, and it tolerates conditions ranging from occasional flooding to short dry spells once it's established (NC State Extension).
Crush a leaf or twig and you will understand the name immediately. Spicebush releases a sharp, citrusy fragrance that early European settlers used as a substitute for allspice when real spice was too expensive or too hard to find, and both Indigenous peoples and settlers brewed the leaves and twigs into tea (NC State Extension).
A native understory shrub of NC's moist woods and floodplains, 6 to 15 feet tall. Dioecious, with fragrant greenish-yellow flowers in early spring before the leaves emerge. Host plant for two swallowtail butterflies and a critical fall food source for migrating songbirds.
The Butterflies That Depend On It
Spicebush is the primary host plant for the Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus), which lays its eggs on the undersides of spicebush leaves. The caterpillars fold the leaf margins over with silk to build a shelter they retreat to between feedings (NC State Extension). Young caterpillars are dead ringers for bird droppings, an unappetizing disguise that keeps predators moving along. Older caterpillars switch strategies entirely, developing a pair of large fake eyespots that make them look like a small snake or tree frog (NC State Extension).
Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillars will also feed on sassafras (Sassafras albidum), sweetbay (Magnolia virginiana), and tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera), so planting any of these alongside spicebush extends the buffet (NC State Extension). Spicebush also supports the Palamedes Swallowtail (Papilio palamedes), which flies in two generations from March to December in our region, with a partial third generation further south (NC State Extension).
Timed for Fall Migration
Spicebush is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female, and only pollinated female plants produce the bright red drupes that ripen in late summer and early fall (NC State Extension). That timing is not a coincidence. Fall fruiting lines up with the peak energy demands of migrating songbirds, and spicebush drupes rank among the highest in fat and protein content of any fruit tested for songbird nutrition, native or exotic, according to the North Carolina Native Plant Society (NC Native Plant Society). Wood Thrushes are especially reliant on the fruit, and NC State Extension also confirms that songbirds broadly eat spicebush drupes during fall migration (NC State Extension).
Growing Spicebush in a Coastal NC Yard
Spicebush is easy to place in a coastal North Carolina landscape. It grows across USDA Hardiness Zones 5a through 9b, comfortably covering the 7b to 9b range common across our area, and it tolerates full shade to part sun, acidic to slightly alkaline soil, and clay, loam, or sandy conditions (NC State Extension). It performs especially well in rain gardens, woodland borders, and the damp, shaded spots along a downspout or drainage swale where a lot of ornamentals struggle. Give it moist, part-shade conditions if you can. It will tolerate more sun with consistent water, and its leaves turn a clean yellow in fall regardless of exposure (NC State Extension).
Spicebush also pairs naturally with other native shrubs that share the same wet, shaded niche, including winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata) and Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica), both of which NC State Extension lists as filling a similar ecological role (NC State Extension). Grouping them gives you layered bloom and fruit through spring, summer, and fall, and a planting that reads as a real plant community instead of a single specimen shrub dropped into a mulch bed.
